Modified Pages and Cleanup Pauses
Modified pages contain changes that may need backing-store writes before the memory can be reused. Cleaning this area is not the same as discarding an unused clean cache. Save work and avoid forcing broad cleanup during disk-intensive activity merely to lower the displayed memory percentage.
What matters for this task
Microsoft’s working-set documentation explains the need to write dirty transition pages before repurposing them. The Mem Reduct source separately identifies modified-page cleanup among operations that can cause pauses. This does not mean every pause has the same cause, but it provides a concrete reason for cautious testing.
Steps to follow
- Identify whether a cleanup pause coincides with file transfers, saving a large project, or other heavy disk activity. Record the time and selected memory regions.
- Disable automatic cleaning and repeat the workload without the cleanup event. This establishes whether the symptom exists independently.
- Remove the modified-page option from your experiment and change no other cleanup region. Compare the same task and observe disk activity.
- Keep the less disruptive setup when it resolves the symptom. If the problem persists without cleaning, investigate storage performance and the application rather than repeatedly flushing more regions.
Check the result
The relevant check is the duration and reproducibility of pauses, not the total number of megabytes reported as cleared. Save the before/after settings with the test notes.
Limitations and precautions
Do not interrupt a system write or power off the computer because a cleanup appears slow.
Questions and answers
Are modified pages disposable data?
No. They can contain changes that need to be written before the memory is reused.
Does clearing modified pages fix disk errors?
No. A memory operation is not a storage repair or a hardware diagnostic.
